5.6 News URL

It is possible to read Usenet newsgroups, accessed from a remote NNTP News server. This is done using the news URL. The specification for the news URL is

news:news.group

Where news.group is the name of the newsgroup. Note that this does not specify the NNTP news server: this must be specified elsewhere. For example, Mosaic 2.0 on UNIX machines requires that you set the environment variable NNTPSERVER to the desired news server.
