4.10 Special Text Formatting Modes
HTML allows for three special text modes. These are logical
modes, since they define blocks of text by their logical purpose.
The specifics of how the blocks are displayed is determined by
the browser.
The three modes are:
- PRE
- Used for preformatted text: i.e. text that should have
the same line breaks, and even fixed-width characters.
This is often used to enter tables in HTML, as HTML does not
have a TABLE element (TABLE exists
in HTML+).
- BLOCKQUOTE
- Used for quotations or blocks of quoted text. BLOCKQUOTE
tells the browser to format this block in a special way to indicate
that this is quoted text.
- ADDRESS
- Used for address information, signatures, authorship, etc.
