Platform SDK Components for Database Developers

Technologies that provide extensible, high-performance data access via Microsoft's database technologies.

Download and Installation Instructions

Before downloading any samples for the Platform SDK, verify that you have already downloaded and installed the build environment for the January 1998 Platform SDK. The build environment is required to build any of the Platform SDK samples.

The Database component download includes samples for OLE DB, ODBC, SQL Server, and DAO developers.

Database Component Descriptions

OLE DB 1.5 Samples (14.99 MB installed)

OLE DB, a set of interfaces for data access, is Microsoft's component database architecture which provides universal data integration over an enterprise's network -- from mainframe to desktop -- regardless of the data type. Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) industry-standard data access interface continues to provide a unified way to access relational data as part of the OLE DB specification.

OLE DB Tools (4.84 MB installed)

Test tools useful when developing using OLE DB.

SQL Server Headers and Libraries (700 KB installed)

Microsoft SQL Server is a scalable, high-performance database management system designed specifically for distributed client/server computing. A comprehensive distributed management framework lets you centrally manage all the database servers in your organization. With advanced Windows-based management tools and powerful server-based job scheduling, you can control multiple servers and automate remote operations in a distributed environment. Using the SQL Server component of the Platform SDK, you can access SQL Server features such as data replication, management tools, and an open system architecture to develop effective and unique information solutions.

SQL Server Samples (2.61 MB installed)

Sample source code for Microsoft SQL Server.

SQL Server Tools (41.0 KB installed)

Test tools useful when developing for SQL Server.

ODBC 3.0 Samples (907.0 KB installed)

Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) version 3.0 is an open-standard API that allows applications to access heterogeneous SQL data. Using ODBC, applications are insulated from underlying network and database implementations.

Many new features have been added to ODBC 3.0, including a faster and more flexible way to bind to multiple sets of data, capability for better error diagnostics and the ability to process bulk operations.

DAO Samples (1.3 MB installed)

Data Access Objects (DAO) provide a framework for using code to create and manipulate databases. DAO supplies a hierarchical set of objects that use the Microsoft Jet database engine to access data and database structure in:

  • Microsoft Jet (.MDB) databases
  • ODBC data sources, using an ODBC driver
  • Installable ISAM databases, such as dBASE®, Paradox, Microsoft FoxPro, and Btrieve®, which the database engine can read directly.
