How to restore from tape in Windows '95, 3.1x, or DOS


This document applies to the following:

Operating System: MS-DOS, Windows 3.1x, '95
Device Type: Ditto Parallel Port, Ditto Insider
Software Version: Ditto Tools


Before your hard drive crashes...
An emergency disk should be created before a hard disk drive failure. An emergency diskette can be created using Ditto Tools version 5.x running under Windows 3.1x by clicking the EMERGENCY DISK icon within the DITTO TOOLS group, this feature is not available in Windows '95.

To create an emergency disk for Windows 3.1x or DOS...

  1. Format a disk in the A: drive by typing FORMAT A:/S <ENTER> at the C:\ prompt.
  2. Copy the DOS utilities to the disk by typing the following at the C:\ prompt:
    • COPY EDIT.COM A: <ENTER>.
    • COPY EDIT.HLP A: <ENTER>.
    • COPY FDISK.EXE A: <ENTER>.
    • COPY FORMAT.COM A: <ENTER>.
  3. Add FILES=30 and BUFFERS=30 to the CONFIG.SYS file by typing EDIT A:\CONFIG.SYS <ENTER> at the C:\ prompt. Within the CONFIG.SYS file, add FILES=30 and BUFFERS=30.
  4. Select FILE then EXIT and save the changes when prompted.

To create an emergency disk for Windows '95...

  1. Click on START, SETTINGS then select CONTROL PANEL.
  2. From within CONTROL PANEL select the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon.
  3. Select the STARTUP DISK tab then click on the CREATE DISK button.
  4. Follow the screen prompts.

After a hard drive failure...
Once a hard drive failure has occurred, files that were backed-up can safely be restored. When performing a restoration, not all files will be selected for restore to avoid potential problems, for more information, see document #3038.

Recovering from a disaster or replacing a hard drive using Windows 3.1x or DOS...

  1. Boot from the Emergency disk by inserting the emergency diskette into the A: drive then turn on the computer system.
  2. Reformat/partition the Hard drive, if required. To re-partition the C: drive, type FDISK <ENTER> at the A:\ prompt. To reformat the C: drive, type FORMAT C: <ENTER> at the A:\ prompt.
  3. Install the DOS version of the backup software.
  4. Rebuild the catalog, see document #3020 for more information.
  5. Restore the files from tape.

Recovering from a disaster or replacing a hard drive using Windows '95...

  1. Boot from the Emergency disk by inserting the emergency diskette into the A: drive then turn on the computer system.
  2. Reformat/partition the Hard drive, if required. To re-partition the C: drive, type FDISK <ENTER> at the A:\ prompt. To reformat the C: drive, type FORMAT C: <ENTER> at the A:\ prompt.
  3. Perform a minimum install of Windows '95.
  4. Install the Windows version of the backup software.
  5. Rebuild the catalog, see document #3020 for more information.
  6. Restore the files from tape.
